Bioassessment identifies what and how many invertebrates are present in aquatic ecosystems and is a direct measurement of the health and integrity of a watershed and all its components (physical, chemical & biological).
The objectives of bioassessment are to:
- determine the health of a watershed
- identify impairments in a watershed
- establish baseline data to assess impacts of new developments
- assess the effectiveness of best management practices and mitigations

Advantages to bioassessment:
- invertebrates are present throughout the year and thus full time monitors
- invertebrates are responsive to ephemeral (short term) pulses of pollution that are undetectable through conventional monitoring methods
- invertebrates are easy to sample
- invertebrates reflect the health of the entire watershed (physical habitat as well as water quality)
