Bioassessment

Bioassessment identifies what and how many invertebrates are present in aquatic ecosystems and is a direct measurement of the health and integrity of a watershed and all its components (physical, chemical & biological).

The objectives of bioassessment are to:

  • determine the health of a watershed
  • identify impairments in a watershed
  • establish baseline data to assess impacts of new developments
  • assess the effectiveness of best management practices and mitigations

 Invertebrate life

Advantages to bioassessment:

  •  invertebrates are present throughout the year and thus full time monitors
  •  invertebrates are responsive to ephemeral (short term) pulses of pollution that are undetectable through conventional monitoring methods
  • invertebrates are easy to sample
  • invertebrates reflect the health of the entire watershed (physical habitat as well as water quality)
